What to wear?

What does one wear to your boyfriend's grandmother's suprise 80th birthday party in August in Massachusetts? I am really stumped. Also what kind of hostess gift do you give your boyfriend's aunt for letting you stay with her the weekend of said party? I know my life is full of such tough decisions! But they are hard choices! Especially because boyfriends never provide any useful information with regards to these things.
