Purple Rhododendron

I remember growing up my mom always trying to grow rhododendrons and them never really taking off, which is odd because Mom is so good with plants. We figured it must be the soil there and the lack of sun (we also didn't have good luck with roses). Now that we have the house I have a huge purple rhododendron out back (along with four rose bushes).
